Five Things for the Paper Obsessed

Design lust and paper obsessions are no joke. I would know.

 After leaving my 9-to-5 job in graphic design media for a completely new industry—the foodie world, which I’m finding has led me to a new category of obsessions (like gelato)—my hunger for design has only intensified. If I don’t feed the craving, the pit in my stomach becomes more pronounced, more hollow.

So with this collection, I give you a healthy dose of eye candy, involving printed things that are foldable, holdable, or just plain adorable. Take a bite out of these five projects for the paper and design obsessed.

1. Nature Silhouettes

Nikolai Tolstyh carefully carves animal silhouettes from stark white paper and then photographs them against backdrops from nature that somehow characterize the animal. The negative space of each cut-out perfectly frames the elements of nature that flood the background. He then posts the results on Instagram, and has amassed more than 15,000 followers.

2. Delicious Postcards

Who says inspiration for your next personal project can’t strike you anywhere? For School of Visual Arts student Joe Haddad, his a-ha moment for these Delicious Postcards came while eating a pastrami sandwich.

3. NoMad Playing Cards

Designer Chad Michaels took the design blogs by storm last year when he released his business card that was so over the top and drenched in design goodness that I doubt anyone dared to throw it away. It’s no surprise that he paid the same attention to detail to these NoMad Playing Cards for the luxurious NoMad Hotel in New York City. The design is inspired by the actual architectural elements of the boutique hotel.

4.  (Design) Observer Quarterly

In October, Design Observer announced a new addition: Observer Quarterly. The announcement was made just on the heels of news that the website was launching Observer Editions, an imprint for printed titles. The new magazine—Observer Quarterly—promises a new theme with each issue, photography and interviews “alongside archival material that will draw a narrative between the history and current condition of new and underappreciated aspects of design culture,” according to Design Observer. The inaugural issue is dubbed the Acoustic Issue.

5.  Vogue Colouring Book

If you’ve been swept by the adult coloring book craze, you’re gonna want to sharpen your colored pencils for this. British Vogue announced that “The Vogue Colouring Book” will release this November. Inspired by the magazine’s archives, you’ll find line drawings detailing the fashion of the fifties including cocktail dresses from iconic designers, like Christian Dior and Givenchy. The best part? You get to be the fashion designer, too, coloring in each piece as you wish and adding patterns to your heart’s content. Vogue is encouraging readers to share their renditions online using the hashtag #VogueColouringBook.
