Erin Condren LifePlanner™ Cuts Through the Digital Clutter

At Mohawk, we are the ultimate material nerds and believe that in an increasingly virtual world, beautiful artifacts connect us in very powerful ways. So, we tend to get a little excited when we partner with other companies who value tactile experiences and emotional connections just as much as we do. That’s why, we ‘re proud to have partnered with Erin Condren for her 2017-2018 LifePlanner™.

Erin Condren started her business from her children’s playroom back in 2001, personalizing and customizing home and office stationery. Soon after, the business took off and turned into a lifestyle brand, dedicated to creating unique and fun products that customize, stylize, and organize your life, with all products being produced in the USA.

One of her most popular products is the LifePlanner™; a daily planner that is customizable to fit your needs…and style. Despite the rise in e-calendars and other apps to help plan your daily events, the LifePlanner™ has been forging its own path through the digital clutter since its introduction in 2007 (the same year iPhones were launched) and continues to be a favorite for many #PlannerAddicts.

2017 marks the 10th anniversary of the LifePlanner™ and Erin wanted to celebrate by introducing some new features including new cover designs, extra add-ons and new paper…Mohawk Superfine Eggshell Ultrawhite 80 text. We’re thrilled to be the canvas that you interact with and plan your day in.

Recently, Erin visited the mill and we had a chance to catch up with her to learn more about her journey, background on the LifePlanner™ and her love for paper.

Your journey began with the creation of your twins’ birth announcements back in 2001. How did you grow from that to the company you are today?

It has truly been a wild ride! After I sent my birth announcements out, I was surprised when I became inundated with requests from friends and family for announcements and holiday cards of their own. In the midst of these requests, my friend encouraged me to sell my designs at a home shopping party at her house. The level of interest was high and word of mouth spread and it took off organically from there, so I set up my “print shop” in my children’s playroom, got my website up in 2005 and was the only employee, printing, shipping and designing everything myself! Then the LifePlanner™ launched and it evolved from there!

Your first LifePlanner™ debuted in 2007. Can you tell us how you transitioned from creating notecards and baby announcements to planners?

The evolution from baby announcements and holiday cards to stationery was pretty natural and rapid, but when I was designing these fun, colorful patterns with unique font combos, I started to think about what was really missing on the market. Tons of companies sell stationery and holiday cards, but what was that niche no one was exploring? This book was all encompassing: a calendar, a to-do list, a wellness tracker, and a memory book all rolled into one pretty package. That was the LifePlanner™.

The removable covers for your LifePlanner™ are quite the differentiator in the market. Why did you decide to do this?

That was a decision that I tossed and turned over! It was so revolutionary at the time – and still is- but I just really believed that with so many gorgeous designs (and new ones coming out throughout the year!) we needed to give our gal the chance to explore all her different personalities and be able to mix and match her cover to her outfit or the season! Personalization changes! You may be a family of 4 with a cute cover photo when you bought your LifePlanner™, but 6 months later you’re a family of five & you need to update that image or maybe you got married and your last name changes! I wanted to allow the customer to evolve along with her book and I knew we had the technology to back it up.

How would you describe your brand? How do you think your former job influenced your brand?

I would say our brand above all, is positive; it is happy and it’s fun! We create products that make people’s lives easier: organizational tools that help them achieve their goals & turn their dreams into plans! We do this through structured layouts that drive organization, inspirational quotes, beautiful colors and positive reminders that anything is possible. I think the way that we approach structuring your life makes all the difference. It really is about not just scheduling each day, but celebrating each day; plan for the future but live in the moment. My former job in the apparel & fashion industry definitely gave me an eye for patterns and colors that pop and I think that helped shape the design aesthetic for sure.

In today’s digital era, why do you think it’s important to write things down?

I think I heard Chris Harrold (Mohawk’s Creative Director) say this recently when I was visiting, but our generation does have “scroll fatigue!” Technology is EVERYWHERE and I think now more than ever, paper sends such a strong message. I know I always prefer a thank you note to a thank you text. It is more meaningful and tactile. Aside from the emotional aspect, there are a number of statistics that show the impact that writing things down has on your success rate- you’re 42% more likely to complete your goals by writing them down.

What value do you find in paper

You can’t really launch a paper planner the same year that the first iPhone launches and not see the value in paper! I am an incredibly visual & tactile person & have always seen the worth in having something printed in front of me. To me, that physicality makes it more real. Writing my store list instead of typing it into my smartphone’s “notes” section, sending a “thinking of you” letter instead of a text; I get so much more impact from paper and I know that hundreds of thousands of other people feel the same way.

What made you select Mohawk Superfine for your LifePlanner?

This year is the 10th edition of the LifePlanner™ and as we continue to evolve and improve year after year, we do get feedback from customers, and the number one ask year-after-year is about paper. I knew we needed to find a gorgeous, rich, luxurious paper option that would a) not allow ink to bleed through when our gals plan and then b) be that beautiful canvas for their lives & let our designs really shine. I found all this in Mohawk Superfine.

To your mind, what makes a perfect planner?

Oh gosh! Well I get planner envy seeing how some of my customers use our planners! But that’s just it- I think everyone has a completely unique take on their planner and how they use it and why they use it. There are other brands out there making beautiful books as well, but to me, the perfect planner is one that is being used to achieve goals and help someone live their dreams. A planner really is an empowering tool.

What’s next for Erin Condren?

Where do I start!?!…there’s obviously a lot of excitement for our new LifePlanner™ (available for sale now!) and I’m so proud of this gorgeous collection; it’s truly our most unique offering yet. We’re launching our flagship brick & mortar store in Austin this year, and we’ve got so many more products in development and ideas in the pipeline…this party Is just getting started!

I would like to send out a HUGE “THANK YOU!” to Mrs. Condren for supporting our class’s DonorsChoose.org project “Claymations: Tolerance in (Stop) Motion”! The partnership between her wonderful company, Erin Condren, and DonorsChoose.org is an inspiring one and I sincerely appreciate the generous gift to our class.
I love the partnership between Mohawk and Erin Condren, two companies that are especially mindful of the impact on nature and encourages sustainability. Kudos to her for nurturing a respectable and unique company that is fun, aesthetically pleasing, and life-changing! I love reading that her parents were also teachers!!! 🙂 I am now inspired to create a project requesting Erin Condren items to provide to my 10th-grade ELA and Creative Writing students because I, too, feel the pull of tangible items that are pleasing to see, practical in its usage, and personal to my experiences. As a teacher, I continue to collect stickers from professional development sessions given out by education companies and programs such as Nearpod, Flipgrid, Osmo, Zinc Learning Labs, etc. and place them on my badge holders/binders because they are an expression of me and what I value; it is the same idea with the Lifeplanner and that is why Erin Condren is hitting it out of the park. I cannot wait to see my students’ eyes light up and hear their “Oooohs” and “Ahhhs” as they appreciate the Erin Condren items that I offer next year and I anticipate many instances of “Awesome!” as I tell them about the generous support that Erin Condren has given to our DonorsChoose.org project. I wish for nothing but success with the partnership between Mohawk and Erin Condren!

    Sincerely,
Mr. Pond and the Class of 2019!

Paper and the art of writing will never go away. It allows us to be creative and thoughtful at the same time, something technology misses. I’ve been in paper all of my career and I’m still in awe of the ways paper can make an impact on all of us. Ms. Condren, keep creating and helping those of us who are doing too many things at once, somewhat organized! Thank you!
