So Noted: Grammy nod for Gary Burden

[Tracy Smith] I am an avid music fan, an avid design fan and an avid art fan. Although we don’t usually write about this type of work on Felt & Wire, I have to tell you about this great package that combines all three disciplines in such a perfect way that it has been nominated for a Grammy Award.

Gary Burden and Neil Young spent over 20 years creating Young’s Archives Vol. 1 box set. Gary Burden is a design legend when it comes to music. He’s one of the originals, art directing and designing album covers since the ’60s, working with greats like The Doors; Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; Joni Mitchell … and the list goes on. He’s a long-time friend of Young and has been collaborating with him since the day they met.

When I first saw the Neil Young Archives box set I thought, “Wow, what a great package!” – and quickly decided the real gem is the journal nestled amongst the hours of music and video. The journal {which happens to be printed on Mohawk Via} is a carefully crafted replica of Neil Young’s personal journal, which he carried with him for years, with photos, drawings, writings, song lyrics and thoughts – complete with maps, doodles and coffee cup stains. This is a glimpse into an era through the eyes of one of the most prominent musicians of our time.

Burden’s wife Jenice Heo is an artist and graphic designer who works side by side with him when she’s not creating her own art. The image atop the box is a photo of one of the pieces she did for her Lucky 13 Series: Neil Young.

We’d like to congratulate all involved! And we thank Burden for the nice things he said about Mohawk on his blog. I recommend you check it out. There are some great stories there about hanging out with – and designing for – some legendary musicians.
