HOW to see TDC55 & TDC2

[Tracy Smith] Last week at the HOW conference, I saw the Type Directors Club traveling exhibition of the 2009 winners in their two annual competitions. TDC55 is a design competition using type, and TDC2 is a type design competition. Both shows featured an impressive collection of winners – every piece was amazing in its own right, and to see them all together was incredible.

The exhibition was a definite must-see at HOW, and there was plenty of buzzing and tweeting about the work. I took lots of photos and had a very hard time deciding which ones to include here. I am typographically in love with the two winning script display typefaces in TDC2, Montague Script {from the US, at left} and Adios {from Argentina, next down}.On the Type Directors Club site, you can see all of the TDC2 2009 winning typefaces as submitted.

TDC55 is the 55th annual international design competition – over 1,700 entries, slightly more than half from the US, slightly less than half from abroad. For the winners, the ratio was reversed: slightly more than half were international, representing 20 countries. Carol Wahler, the Executive Director of the TDC, told me that the judges were delighted by the number of student projects that were winners. One of my favorite student entries is the very last photo below. The winners{and jurors} of TDC55 are listed on the Type Directors Club site. Werner Design Werks in Minneapolis is current designing Typography 30, which will showcase all of the winning work. The book will be available early in December.

Tracy Smith acknowledges with regret that the blog gods do not allow us to use special characters in titles. This is the only reason that we didn’t superscript the 2 in TDC2.
