Debbie Millman journals to ‘Beginners’

Debbie Millman Beginners lead

We’ve long been fans of Debbie Millman’s visual essays, now regularly published to Imprint. Her latest “essay” literally drew inspiration from Mike Mills‘ Oscar-winning film, Beginners. She picked up a journal…

… And began to draw. Watching the film from the comfort of her couch, Debbie says, “I got so inspired watching the film that about 5 or ten minutes in, I grabbed a blank notebook and started drawing along to the movie. I did it live, in real time, no erasing or editing, and I didn’t stop until the movie was over. It was all done it one take. Journaling while watching the movie made me über aware of the language of the movie, which I fell madly in love with.” View her notebook below, filmed by Brent Taylor. Don’t worry, if you haven’t seen the movie, there are no spoilers.

Page-turning by Jacquie Parker. Music from the Beginners soundtrack. [SJ]

What an amazing project. So spontaneous, so evocative! I saw the movie quite some time ago, and this film brought back the beauty and emotion of it. Bravo, Debbie!
    And thank you.

I have not yet seen the film … but will. What I loved about Debbie’s journal was the very idea of journaling a movie while you watch it. (I might not do it in a theater, but I would do it at home.) And, I’d love to be able to go back to that journal afterwards to help me remember the film. Course it would be really nice to have my journal filmed by Brent …. Nice post!
