The AIGA National Conference was held in Minneapolis this year, October 10-12. Mohawk was pleased to support and sponsor the event, especially as this year’s conference began the official celebration of AIGAs 100th anniversary! Here’s a quick recap of the four inspiring days we spent in Minneapolis.
The Type Directors Club 59th annual communication design competition was featured in the opening night preview at Rat Race Studios in Minneapolis. Mohawk co-hosted the event along with Rat Race Studios, Werner Design Werks, and Studio on Fire, and it was a terrific celebration of design. Designers and typographers mingled on a gorgeous night in the airy Rat Race Studio space, with over 500 attendees spilling into the alleyway behind the studio. It was a great turnout, and an inspirational way to kick off the conference. The beautifully letterpressed invitation was printed on Mohawk Superfine Smooth Ultrawhite 160 dtc, and designed by Werner Design Werks.
This year’s theme was “Head, Heart, Hand” – three core elements of modern design practice. Design thinking and strategy, design for social impact, and design as craft were all major focuses within this theme. Mohawk’s Maker campaign was especially well-received as a relevant example of the importance of design and art as a craft.
The Mohawk team converged on the Minneapolis Convention Center on Thursday, October 10th to set up. We organized our booth, merchandised the beautiful new Mohawk Maker publications, and got ready to greet some makers!
We supported Spark Letterpress of South Dakota, as they featured their antique refurbished letterpress and gave attendees a chance to letterpress a coaster on Mohawk paper, celebrating 100 years of the AIGA.
We debuted our second issue of the Maker Quarterly at the AIGA conference, and are excited to be releasing it publicly in the next few weeks.
Special thanks to AIGA for their dedication and commitment to pulling together a fantastic conference, and to our team of Mohawk colleagues for their passion and hard work while at the conference (especially our colleague, Jonathan, who helped close the show with a bang making it a particularly smashing success).
