Today we’re kicking off a series of interviews with a selection of talented makers, featured in the first edition of the Mohawk Maker Quarterly. We sat down with Carl Chiara of Unionmade, known for their outstanding collection of men’s casual and fine clothing, shoes, books, and men’s grooming products.
The name “Unionmade” was created around the idea of well-made and aesthetically classic goods. Browsing through the Unionmade collection online, it’s clear that the carefully curated selection of goods is meant to showcase the craft of making and the value behind these unique goods.
Unionmade opened in November 2009 in San Francisco, and two years later a second location opened in Santa Monica. The store has received multiple awards for its men’s fashions and independent status, and has garnered a similar reputation around that status.
Q: How did you become involved and interested in your craft?
I have always been interested in making things. The subject matter seems secondary but I have always been interested in creating and building and putting things together.
Q: What is your favorite product/offering and why? If it’s a product, do you personally make it?
It is always fun to see how our Indigo Collection turns out. We get to work with such an amazing team of people all around the world to create such a special and interesting collection.
The Indigo Collection is in its second year run at Unionmade and is a tribute to some of our favorite San Franciscans. All of the pieces in the collection are unique to the store and are carefully crafted to create a beautiful assortment of clothing and accessories.
